A step towards better stroke diagnosis

October 28, 2010

Dr. Jeff Perry recently published a study that could help emergency physicians diagnose a particularly deadly (and easy to miss) type of stroke called a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). By studying 33 clinical characteristics in 2,000 emergency patients with headache, Dr. Perry and his team derived three clinical decision rules that could help rule out SAH without the need for CT scanning and invasive diagnostic testing. After further studies, one rule is expected to be chosen for widespread implementation. See BMJ for details.

Dr. Perry is a Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (Clinical Epidemiology Program), an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa (Faculty of Medicine) and an Emergency Medicine Physician at The Ottawa Hospital.
