Cardiovascular researchers get $1.2M boost from Heart and Stroke Foundation

May 4, 2016

Five scientists from the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute were successful in the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s recent grant-in-aid grant competition, representing a success rate of 50% compared to the national average of 20%. The new funding will support projects in the following areas: a novel molecular approach for stroke prevention (Dr. Richard Bergeron), effect of pneumonia on blood vessel inflammation (Dr. Vicente Corrales-Medina with coPI Dr. Girish Dwivedi from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute), heart regeneration (Dr. Lynn Megeney), clinical trial of statins in venous thromboembolism (Dr. Marc Rodger) and brain regeneration after stroke (Dr. Jing Wang).

“Innovative studies aimed at discovering new approaches to prevent and treat heart disease and stroke hold great promise in creating more survivors,” says, Mary Lewis, VP Research, Advocacy and Health Promotion at the Heart and Stroke Foundation. “The Foundation invests in research with the most potential to prevent disease, save lives and promote recovery. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we are very pleased to fund the work of the Ottawa Hospital and its scientists. We look forward to their results.”
