New brain imaging approach could help prevent strokes
December 17, 2014
New research led by Dr.
Jeffrey Perry
shows that a CT scan done within 24 hours of a mild, non-disabling stroke can help determine which patients are likely to suffer a subsequent stroke in the near future. In addition, this is the first study to show that different patterns of damage in the brain can predict when a patient will be at the highest risk of another stroke. For example, patients with certain kinds of brain damage faced an eight fold risk within 90 days. This prospective, multi-centre cohort study could lead to better approaches for tailoring preventative treatments to those who need them most. For details, see the original paper in the journal
