Junior Health Economist (2 year position with possibility for renewal)

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital and an affiliated institute of the University of Ottawa. With more than 1,700 scientists, clinician investigators, trainees and staff, and total revenues of more than $100 million, the OHRI is one of the foremost Canadian hospital-based research institutes.

 

The Ottawa Methods Centre is part of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and in the past year, has undertaken a major strategic development in the area of health economics.  As a result of this initiative, the Ottawa Methods Centre is seeking a full-time Junior Health Economist to work as part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team.  The successful candidate will work under the guidance of a Health Economist and will participate in multidisciplinary research teams and support the economic component of projects (e.g., the development of research proposal; or the review of an existing economic analysis of a health technology such as a drug, or medical device).

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support project of scientists/health economists to ensure project objectives are met
  • Systematically review and critically appraise existing economic evaluations (model structure, model inputs, assumptions, and results)
  • Design and undertake economic evaluations, budget impact analyses, and reviews of economic evidence of health technologies
  • Develop computer-based economic models for performing economic evaluations and budget impact analyses, as required
  • Provide input and review reports of other researchers, including scientists/health economists
  • Prepare and communicate findings in posted reports and peer-reviewed publications, rounds, and scientific conferences, as required
  • Assist with grant writing and submissions
  • Assist with manuscript writing and submissions


Basic Qualifications:

  • Postgraduate training (MScin relevant area, such as health economics, public health, epidemiology, health services research, economics, mathematics), with health economic evaluation as a major focus of thesis work
  • Strong analytical abilities
  • Knowledge in the areas of biostatistics, clinical research methods, and epidemiology
  • Coursework or extensive experience in decision-analytic modeling, including Markov models and simulation modeling
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written formats

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively as both part of a team and independently.


Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven self-starter
  • Proven ability to work independently, take direction from various sources and prioritize workload with particular attention to detail
  • Must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including word processing, presentation, Internet and spreadsheet, and data management skills
  • Extensive programming experience with statistical packages, particularly STATA, SAS and/or Microsoft Excel with Visual Basic for Applications
  • Experience conducting analyses of large administrative claims data and other retrospective data sources, including development of study design, writing analysis plans, SAS programming to conduct the analysis, and reporting of the results
  • Proficient in English

Benefits and Opportunities:

Salary range for this position is $32.71/ hr (min) to $40.62/ hr (max). This is a full-time, 2 year contract with possibility of renewal.  Will be a member of an exciting and innovative research program in a world-renowned research institute.
