Research Day is a two-day conference that celebrates research conducted by trainees at The Ottawa Hospital, in partnership with the University of Ottawa. It includes oral and poster presentations, as well as keynote talks by guest speakers.

Wednesday, November 15, 2023 – Virtual poster evaluations on Gather. Two sessions: 10 a.m.-11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
Thursday, November 16, 2023 – In-person event, St. Elias Centre, 750 Ridgewood Ave, 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. with opportunity to view posters

  • All poster evaluations will happen Nov. 15 on the Gather virtual platform
  • There is space for 60 presenters to bring a printed version of their poster to the St. Elias Centre on Nov. 16 for the chance to win a People’s Choice Poster Award. Registration to do so is first come, first served.

  • An exciting live competition where trainees pitch their project to captivate any audience
  • Pitches judged on delivery, not scientific content
  • Finalists offered group and individual training to refine their pitches
  • Prizes: $250 for 1st place
  • Eligible: undergrads, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical students, residents who did not participate in the competition last year

What is OHRI Research Day?

Research Day is a two-day conference that celebrates research conducted by trainees at The Ottawa Hospital, in partnership with the University of Ottawa. It includes oral and poster presentations, as well as keynote talks by guest speakers.

Who should attend?

Everyone at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute can attend. Staff of The Ottawa Hospital with an interest in research can also attend provided they have permission from their supervisor.

Why should I go?

You can learn what research colleagues in other areas are working on and identify ways that you might collaborate. It’s also a great venue for networking. If you’re a trainee, you can present your research and get feedback on it, and maybe even win a prize.

Can I submit an abstract?

Everyone at The Ottawa Hospital/ Research Institute can submit an abstract, including trainees of affiliate investigators.

Can I compete in the oral or poster competition?

The following categories are eligible for competition. Note that anyone who gave an oral last year is not eligible to present an oral this year.

  • Oral competition, $250, $200, $150
    • Clinical award*: $250
    • Eligible: undergrads, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical students, residents. Being selected to give an oral presentation is an honour trainees can proudly place on their CV
  • Postdoc and Clinical Fellows poster: $250, $200, $150
    • Clinical award: $250
    • Eligible: postdocs and clinical fellows
  • PhD poster: $250, $200, $150, $125
    • Clinical award: $250
    • Eligible: PhD and MD/PhDs students
  • MSc and others poster: $250, $200, $150, $125
    • Clinical award: $250
    • Eligible: MSc students and residents
  • Undergrad poster: $250
    • Eligible: medical students, 4th year honours, co-op students

* Clinical research studies people, or data or tissue from people. Trainees must indicate they are presenting a clinical abstract when they register

Can I present a poster if I’m not eligible for the poster competition?

Yes.

What is expected of oral presenters?

We ask trainees to make a special effort to ensure that their oral presentations are accessible to all non-specialists in the audience, including basic and clinical scientists as well as trainees and staff. Presenters are expected to attend a two-hour workshop to help them polish their presentation.

Do I have to present a poster or an oral presentation to attend?

No, you do not have to present to attend. Many people just come to learn and network.

Is there a cost to attend?

This event is free for members of The Ottawa Hospital and the Research Institute. However, registration is required to plan poster and oral presentation evaluations.

When is the deadline to register?

The deadline to register and to submit an abstract is NOON, Friday, September 29th. If you register early, you can continue to log back in and edit your abstract up until the deadline.
