Abstract:
In Canada, the breast cancer mortality rate has dropped by 40 % since 1989, almost equally attributed to screening mammography and improvements in treatment. Screening modalities are primarily digital mammography for average-risk women, with the addition of MRI for high-risk women. Additional tomosynthesis screening is only available in some centers, and supplementary breast ultrasound for women with dense breasts is only rarely offered. Provincial mammography screening programs target women aged 50-74 and most programs accept women aged 40-49 and over 74 years of age. The participation rate with mammography screening in Canada is 65 %. The methods of reaching women to increase participation rates are illustrated in this review article. The key is to engage patients, physicians, health care systems and the community in a multifaceted approach to achieve the greatest success. (C) 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
