Diabetes, Obesity, Metabolism and Endocrinology (DOME)

The OHRI’s Diabetes, Obesity, Metabolism and Endocrinology (DOME) Research Centre includes 11 scientists and clinical investigators, along with several dozen graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research technicians and coordinators. This group is closely associated with The Ottawa Hospital’s Foustanellas Endocrine and Diabetes Centre as well as with the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine and Ottawa’s Department of Medicine (Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism). Our research is also aligned with chronic disease initiatives led by the Champlain Local Health Integration Network.

Current research is focused on areas such as:

  • Identifying foods such as wheat proteins that may trigger type 1 diabetes in some people.
  • Clinical trials to evaluate different types of exercise and various medications to optimize care and control of type 2 diabetes and related conditions.
  • Investigating how fat cells develop and how they communicate with other cells in the body and how excess fat, inflammation, and altered lipoproteins contribute to the development of diabetes and heart disease
  • Developing cholesterol-altering therapeutics based on molecules such as pro-protein convertases.
  • Clinical studies of thyroid conditions such as hypothyroidism and thyroid cancer.
  • Studying the brain’s influence on the liver and on glucose production.
  • Clinical studies of hypertension and gestational diabetes during pregnancy.
