2006 Annual Site Investigators Meeting                                                                                                                             

  • The Annual OPALS Prehospital Research Group Site Investigators meeting is set to take place on November 23 & 24 in Ottawa at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in the Byward Market. The goals of the meeting are to share research results as well as issues and solutions for research in progress. Further details will be provided in the coming months.

Revamped Emergency Medicine Research Website                                                                                                         

  • The Emergency Medicine Research Group has unveiled its new website. Information on all OPALS PRG research studies is available including contact information, newsletters and publication lists. http://www.ohri.ca/emerg/

ROC Hypertonic Saline Study                                                                                                                                                

  • Our site remains the only site in the North American ROC to have started the study. Essex Kent EMS has enrolled all 4 trauma patients. We have several other EMS Services that we expect to begin enrolling by July 1st. 

ROC Epistry                                                                                                                                                                               

  • We have now enrolled 976 cardiac and 215 trauma cases in the ROC Registry. We continue to lead the ROC in epistry enrollment as well.

CPR Process Monitoring                                                                                                                                                          

  • Essex-Kent and Sarnia are now sending defibrillator files to Ottawa. Have you begun to make arrangements for defibrillator file download and transfer to us? If not, please contact Patrick Lefaivre plefaivre@ohri.ca 613-798-5555 x13799 to begin this process.

ROC PRIMED Cardiac Arrest Study                                                                                                                                       

  • We expect the first Ottawa/OPALS sites to begin patient enrollment during Fall 2006.
  • Paramedic and Fire fighter training is in progress in several sites.
  • The first ethics application was submitted to the Ottawa Hospital.
  • Study bags will contain the ITD valve. A King mask and mask straps will be provided on a request basis.
  • Superior North EMS and Thunder Bay Fire will be participating in a substudy of CPR feedback provided by Philips devices. Other sites will be Pittsburg, Portland and Seattle/King County.

OPALS PRG Research Results Presented Internationally                                                                                                 

  • OPALS Investigators gave 12 presentations at the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine in May and at the International Conference of Emergency Medicine in Halifax in June. Citation information will soon be available on our website at http://www.ohri.ca/emerg/
