Ottawa researchers call for better tools to combine health data

December 9, 2015

Health data has never been more plentiful, from the millions of research studies published every year, to data from personal genome sequencing, electronic health records and wearable devices. Yet sifting through this information to make evidence-based decisions is becoming increasingly difficult, even for experts. In a recent edition of Nature, Drs. Jeremy Grimshaw, Peter Tugwell and others call for researchers to develop better tools to combine data from different sources, taking biases and limitations into account. They also explore areas in which these tools could have a huge impact, including outbreak detection, cancer screening and drug safety surveillance.

About The Ottawa Hospital

The Ottawa Hospital is one of Canada’s largest learning and research hospitals with over 1,100 beds, approximately 12,000 staff and an annual budget of over $1.2 billion. Our focus on research and learning helps us develop new and innovative ways to treat patients and improve care. As a multi-campus hospital, affiliated with the University of Ottawa, we deliver specialized care to the Eastern Ontario region, but our techniques and research discoveries are adopted around the world. We engage the community at all levels to support our vision for better patient care.
