$4.2M grant to advance development of next-generation regenerative therapies for vascular disease

July 13, 2016

Dr. Duncan Stewart has been awarded $4.2M from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to advance our understanding of vascular disease and develop next-generation regenerative therapies. Dr. Stewart and his team have already initiated world-first clinical trials of stem cell therapies for pulmonary hypertension, heart attack and septic shock. This grant will allow them to develop strategies that could make these therapies even more effective, such as “hydrogel cocoons” that could help injected cells make a more permanent home in the body. This is one of 22 grants awarded to researchers from The Ottawa Hospital / uOttawa in the July 2015 CIHR competition.

Collaborators: Marjorie Brand, David Courtman, Edwin Cuppen, Darryl Davis, Yupu Deng, Claudia dos Santos, Dean Fergusson, Michel Godin, Wolfgang Kuebler, Lauralyn McIntyre, Shirley Mei, Nicholas Morrell, Kenny Schlosser, William Stanford, Monica Taljaard.
