New lead in the fight against type 1 diabetes

November 20, 2013

Dr. Fraser Scott has been awarded nearly $900,000 from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to study the possible role of natural anti-microbial proteins in preventing type 1 diabetes. Dr. Scott’s previous research suggests that certain anti-microbial proteins may promote the regeneration of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, increase levels of “good bacteria” in the gut and promote a protective kind of immune response in animal models, thereby preventing type-1 diabetes.

A summary of this project can be found in CIHR’s Funding Decisions Database.
