Any research project involving human subjects carried out by a member of the staff of the following organizations:

  • The Ottawa Hospital, Civic, General or Riverside Campus;
  • The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre;
  • University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine; and
  • University of Ottawa, Heart Institute

must be reviewed and approved by the Ottawa Hospital Research Ethics Board before work is started.

Research is defined as a systematic investigation to establish facts, principles or develop generalizable knowledge. Research projects include those projects conducted by staff or students that may involve surgery, the administration of investigational or approved drugs, investigational or approved medical devices, medical imaging or other diagnostic techniques, biopsies, the taking of blood or other specimens, the creation of databases for research purposes, the review of medical records, data collected through the use of questionnaires, interviews, observations, testing, video and audio taping, or the collection of information from records in the public domain etc for research purposes.

In any situation where there is uncertainty as to whether ethics review is required, the Ottawa Hospital Research Ethics Board must be consulted.
