Associate Scientist, Chronic Disease, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute
Physician, Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, The Ottawa HospitalAssistant Professor, Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa
Dr. Fairhead's major research interest is the immunology of renal disease including autoimmune, alloimmune, and inflammatory injuries to the kidney. His laboratory is focused on understanding the transition between innate and adaptive immunity and the factors that promote a functional versus a pathogenic immune response.
Currently, he is working on understanding the role of the protein RIP2 on T cell activation. They believe that RIP2 may play an important role in tailoring the adaptive immune response to different infections. Future directions for his lab include developing a translational approach to the study of immune-mediated injury in kidney transplant recipients and to examine the role of inflammation in chronic diseases such as diabetic nephropathy.
Dr. Fairhead received his M.D. at Queen's University in 2000 and completed postgraduate training in internal medicine and nephrology at the University of Alberta in 2005. Subsequently, he completed a three year fellowship in transplant immunobiology at the University of Western Ontario. He is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in both internal medicine and nephrology. Dr. Fairhead joined The Ottawa Hospital / University of Ottawa Division of Nephrology in 2008.
