The Multiple Sclerosis Clinic is funded partially by the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Ontario Division. It was established in 1982 and now has a population of more than 2000 patients. The mandate of Ontario clinics is to provide service and education and to attract / promote research in Multiple Sclerosis. Basic clinic staff comprises two full time secretaries and a part-time assistant, one full time nurse-coordinator and one full time therapeutics nurse. The clinical research unit has five full time clinic coordinators running over a dozen therapeutic trials. The research laboratory is committed to basic neuroimmunological studies trying to define the cellular basis of MS pathogenesis. A level III pathogen facility forms part of substantial laboratory space and affords the ability to work with transformed immortalized T cells derived from patients' spinal fluid and blood.
