Biographical Sketch

Dr. O'Connor is a world leader in patient decision aids for options with benefit/harm profiles that patient value differently. Her contributions include: a conceptual framework for managing decisional conflict; over 30 patient decision aids; a widely used evaluation measure of decisional conflict; the first systematic review of trials of patient decision aids, and several knowledge translation interventions for implementing patient decision support. Internationally, Dr. O'Connor has projects in the U.S, U.K, and Chile. She leads the International Cochrane Collaboration team that summarizes trials of patient decision aids (over 62) and that updates a global inventory of evaluated patient decisions aids (over 500). Dr. O'Connor co-leads a 14 country international consensus process on standards for developing and evaluating patient decision aids (IPDAS). She is a member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and has been recognized for her work by awards such as the Society for Medical Decision Making John Eisenberg Award for Exemplary Leadership.

Research

Development and evaluation of decision aids

Development and testing of decision support/evaluation methods

Educating health practitioners/clinicians and consumers in shared decision making

Decisional Conflict Models
Research examining factors influencing individuals' health decisions and the efficacy of consumer decision aids to promote effective decision making. Decisions include: Cox2 Inhibitors for osteoarthritis, biologics for rheumatoid arthritis, early stage seminoma, CF lung transplantation, influenza immunization, vaginal birth after caesarean, twin births, caregivers' perspectives re location of care for terminally ill family member, and parents' care options for babies with extremely low birth-weight, and other decisions relevant to ultimately improving our understanding of how patients make decisions affecting their health and what clinicians/practitioners can do to promote effective decision making.
