New scientist profile: Dr. Krishan Yadav aims to improve care for skin infections

December 11, 2019

“Skin infections represent 2-3 percent of all emergency department visits. My research can help streamline care for these patients.”-  Dr. Krishan Yadav, associate scientist and emergency department physician at The Ottawa Hospital, and assistant professor at the University of Ottawa.Dr. Krishan Yadav wants to find the best way to treat the patients with skin infections he sees in the emergency department. Currently there is little evidence on how best to treat common skin infections such as cellulitis.

Patients are either prescribed antibiotic pills to take at home or receive doses of antibiotics intravenously from a healthcare provider. Treatment fails about twenty percent of the time, requiring patients who are taking pills to switch to IV antibiotics or to be hospitalized.

Dr. Yadav recently received funding to evaluate the effectiveness of the dedicated “outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy” (OPAT) clinic at The Ottawa Hospital for patients with cellulitis. The clinic helps patients access IV antibiotics in their community instead of visiting an emergency department or hospital ward, and provides follow-up with an infectious disease physician.

“Skin infections represent 2-3 percent of all emergency department visits," said Dr. Yadav. "My research can help streamline care for these patients.”

Dr. Yadav was recently appointed as an associate scientist in the Clinical Epidemiology Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He is an emergency department physician at The Ottawa Hospital, and assistant professor at the University of Ottawa.

The Ottawa Hospital: Inspired by research. Driven by compassion

The Ottawa Hospital is one of Canada’s largest learning and research hospitals with over 1,100 beds, approximately 12,000 staff and an annual budget of over $1.2 billion. Our focus on research and learning helps us develop new and innovative ways to treat patients and improve care. As a multi-campus hospital, affiliated with the University of Ottawa, we deliver specialized care to the Eastern Ontario region, but our techniques and research discoveries are adopted around the world. We engage the community at all levels to support our vision for better patient care. See www.ohri.ca for more information about research at The Ottawa Hospital.
