Dr. Mark Freedman has received the international Giants of Multiple Sclerosis Award for his groundbreaking research and unwavering dedication to the field.

Dr. Freedman co-led a pivotal clinical trial of bone marrow stem cell transplantation for MS, together with Dr. Harold Atkins. This intensive procedure, which completely wipes out a patient’s immune system and then regenerates a new one, can halt the progression of MS and allow repair in patients with early, aggressive forms of the disease.

As co-chair of the International Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation Study Group, Dr. Freedman continues to drive global collaboration in MS research. His past research into immune mechanisms, including gamma-delta T-cells, has deepened scientific understanding and informed new treatment strategies for the disease. He most recently championed the development of serum biomarkers for MS, especially neurofilament light chain, which has changed the way MS patients are monitored and how medication is chosen and evaluated.

Beyond the lab, Dr. Freedman is a passionate educator and advocate. Learn more about the Giants of MS Awards, presented by the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers and NeurologyLive.
