The Ottawa Hospital joins landmark bipolar disorder research network BD2

July 8, 2025

“We’re honoured that Ottawa will be part of the BD² Integrated Network and expand on the thoughtful work of BD², bringing hope and tangible solutions to people living with bipolar disorder,” said Dr. Jess Fiedorowicz. The Ottawa Hospital’s Research Institute has been awarded US$ 2.3 million to join Breakthrough Discoveries for thriving with Bipolar Disorder (BD²). This landmark collaborative research and care network aims to improve care, interventions, and outcomes for people living with bipolar disorder.

More than 70 per cent of people with bipolar disorder are initially misdiagnosed and less than half find an effective treatment.

As part of this partnership, people with bipolar disorder who are undergoing treatment at The Ottawa Hospital will soon have the opportunity to participate in a large cohort study with advanced brain imaging and monitoring. This will be integrated with a learning health network to iteratively improve outcomes.

“We’re honoured that Ottawa will be part of the BD² Integrated Network and expand on the thoughtful work of BD², bringing hope and tangible solutions to people living with bipolar disorder,” said Dr. Jess Fiedorowicz, Head and Chief of Mental Health at The Ottawa Hospital and professor at the University of Ottawa.

BD2’s expansion to Canada is part of a partnership with Brain Canada. See media release for details.
