Ottawa researcher receives major grant to fight tuberculosis in Nunavut

Dr. Gonzalo Alvarez and colleagues were recently awarded an $800,000 grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada for a project aimed at reducing the burden of tuberculosis (TB) in Nunavut, where the rate of new infections is 50 times greater than the national average.
In partnership with the Government of Nunavut, Dr. Alvarez will help implement a TB awareness campaign and a door-to-door treatment program, while also collecting data that will help inform anti-TB efforts in other communities. See

Dr. Alvarez was also recently awarded the Ottawa Department of Medicine’s Jeff Turnbull Contributions to International Medicine Award for his “unwavering dedication to improving the quality of tuberculosis care in South Africa and Nunavut”.
Dr. Alvarez is an Associate Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (Clinical Epidemiology Program), Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa (Faculty of Medicine), Respirologist at The Ottawa Hospital and a Consultant Respirologist for Nunavut.
