The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital and an affiliated institute of the University of Ottawa. Our goal is to make tomorrow’s health care possible today; bringing new hope to our patients, while advancing health research at a global level. With more than 1,700 scientists, clinical investigators, trainees and staff, and total revenues of more than $100 million, OHRI is one of the foremost Canadian hospital-based research institutes.

The goal of the OHRI Communications Office is to enhance communication within the Institute and raise awareness of our research in the community and beyond, with the end goals of improving recruitment, retention, fundraising and partner relations. We are seeking an independent, responsible and experienced individual to join our team for an eight month contract, beginning on March 3rd, 2014. The new employee will report to the Director of Communications and Public Relations at OHRI, and will work closely with other administrative and scientific staff at the Institute, as well as with communications colleagues at partner organizations such as The Ottawa Hospital, The Ottawa Hospital Foundation and the University of Ottawa.

 

Key tasks will include:

  • Proposing, writing and editing content for media releases, newsletters, the website, social media, the annual report and other communications tools
  • Working with researchers, the media, patients and partners to coordinate positive media coverage
  • Consultation on strategic communications issues, including branding, media relations, internal communications and partner relations
  • Coordinating special events
  • Helping with the development of fundraising and marketing materials
  • Filling in for the Director of Communications and Public Relations when she / he is away

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Experience in communications or journalism, usually acquired through a postsecondary education program or through equivalent experience
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including an ability to summarize technical or scientific concepts in concise, simple language
  • Experience working with the media
  • Ability to think strategically, solve problems and prioritize, both independently and as part of a team
  • Tact, diplomacy, creativity, strong organizational skills and initiative
  • Experience in science and research
  • Experience in branding and marketing
  • Experience in internet and social media communications
  • Experience in event-planning
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (including Outlook, Word, Powerpoint and some Excel)
  • Familiarity with basic photography, photo editing and design software (Adobe)
  • Ability to communicate in English and French

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience.
