International meeting advances the development of ethical guidelines for clinical trials

December 1, 2011

Dr. Monica Taljaard recently hosted an international meeting on the ethics of cluster-randomized clinical trials, which compare different treatments by randomly assigning some regions (or hospitals) to provide one treatment while the others provide another. More than 70 people attended in person and 25 attended over the web, including representatives from the World Health Organization. This meeting is a crucial step in the development of guidelines to help researchers design and conduct these trials with high ethical standards.

The meeting was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, with Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw as Co-Principal Investigator. All research at OHRI is also supported by The Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
