Developing a tool to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease among certain populations

November 5, 2014

Drs. Doug Manuel and Monica Taljaard have published a protocol in the online medical journal BMJ Open to develop a new tool designed to assess the risk of people developing cardiovascular disease among certain populations. They will develop, evaluate and apply cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk algorithms for the population setting. Drs. Manuel and Taljaard have already used the Ontario sample of the Canadian Community Health Survey (2001, 2003, 2005), which involved 77,251 respondents, to assess risk factors focusing on health behaviours such as physical activity, diet, smoking and alcohol use. They will link this survey with outcomes found in administrative health-care databases, identifying predictors of CVD. The algorithm will be accessible electronically for population and individual uses. Read the protocol.
