Study to explore why people plan to get healthy, but don't

April 13, 2014

Dr. Janet Squires has been awarded $99,852 by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to study the plans people make to change their behaviour and improve their health, and why those plans often fail to materialize. A person may develop a plan to quit smoking, for example, but may never actually stop using cigarettes despite their best intentions. Similarly, health-care practitioners may plan to use best practice guidelines in their work but may never actually do so. Understanding conditional plans that are used to promote behavioural change, and how to best turn intentions into actions when it comes to patients and their health care providers, will benefit the entire medical community. Further details, including a list of co-investigators, can be found in CIHR’s Funding Decision Database.
