GENEROUS DONOR SUPPORTS CENTRE FOR STROKE RECOVERY

Ottawa, Ontario, March 27, 2003 – A prominent Toronto entrepreneur, Dr. George Jackowski, has generously given $3.25 million to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation and the University of Ottawa for the Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery in Ottawa.

“It is my honour to contribute to such an important project,” said George Jackowski. “This centre will enable those who have suffered a stroke to lead an improved quality of life.“

“This new Centre will integrate basic and clinical research to minimize neuronal damage and promote functional recovery after stroke,” explained Dr. Antoine Hakim, director of neurosciences research at the Ottawa Health Research Institute and the University of Ottawa.

The Ottawa Hospital Foundation and the University of Ottawa are grateful to Dr. Jackowski for his generosity.

“The University of Ottawa is pleased to continue to play a role in this important Centre,” said Dr. Gilles Party, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ottawa. “Thanks to Dr. Jackowski’s gift, the Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery will bring together clinical research and education to harness the best minds in the country.”

“This Centre of Excellence will be a shining example of what an academic health sciences centre is all about: researchers, educators and clinicians working together to ease the burden of illness for patients,” said Dr. Jack Kitts, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital. “Generous individuals like Dr. Jackowski who share this vision make a profound and lasting impact.”

The gift is part of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation Legacy Campaign and is part of the $24 million Campaign total.
