Outstanding researchers at uOttawa and OHRI to receive significant funding
September 10, 2010
As the University of Ottawa welcomes back thousands of students to its campus, the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation today announced $3.6 million dollars in funding to support the outstanding research being conducted by professors and students from the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.
Eight research projects, in areas such as health and medicine, nanophotonics, physics and visual arts, will receive a total of $2.3 million under the
Ontario Research Fund–Research Infrastructure Program
. This substantial investment will fund new equipment that will maintain the projects’ competitive edge and ensure they continue to excel.
In addition, eight uOttawa researchers and one affiliated with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) will each receive up to $140,000 as part of the
Early Researcher Awards
, a program that helps Ontario’s most promising researchers recruit students, research fellows, technicians and assistants to build competitive research teams.
“Today’s announcement by the government of Ontario again demonstrates the strength and excellence of research at our institution. Allowing our professors to bring their research to another level and to pursue their work in state-of-the-art facilities not only enhances the student experience, but also impacts the lives of all Canadians,” says Mona Nemer, vice-president, Research, at the University of Ottawa.
“This is another excellent example of the continued commitment of the Ontario government to supporting outstanding research,” adds Dr. Duncan Stewart, CEO and scientific director of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. “This support is critical for advancing our research in important areas such as cancer and stem-cell therapies. Randomized clinical trials will be central for turning these discoveries into effective treatments, ultimately benefitting the people of Ontario, not only by improving health, but also by providing jobs and training opportunities and fuelling the new economy.”
OHRI, an affiliated research institute of the University of Ottawa boasting more than 1,500 scientists, clinicians, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and support staff, is one of the largest and most prestigious hospital-based research centres in Canada.
The University of Ottawa is committed to research excellence and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation, which attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
