Researcher wins prestigious CIHR fellowship to study respiratory disease
July 3, 2014
Dr. Lisa Marie Julian in Dr.
Bill Stanford's
lab has been awarded the
Canadian Institutes of Health Research
(CIHR)
Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship
worth $140,000 over two years. Dr. Julian plans to use the Banting Fellowship to focus on developing human models of Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a tumour disorder unique to the female population that leads to lung tissue destruction and respiratory failure. As part of Dr. Stanford's team looking at this disease, she plans to produce LAM cells that can be studied in the lab and used to generate humanized animal models of the disease. Treatment options for LAM are limited and this research will help identify novel therapeutic approaches to eliminate LAM cells and to prevent tumour progression.
