Applying Supervised Machine Learning to Predict Complex Clinical Course in Youth with Eating Disorders
Speaker: Stephanie Ryall, MD
Stephanie is a Master’s student in the Clinical Science and Translational Medicine program at the University of Ottawa, supervised by Dr. Nicole Obeid in the CHEO Eating Disorder Research Lab. Her research is focused on applying machine learning to precision medicine data to predict and understand eating disorder trajectories. She holds an MD from Western University (2024) and a BSc in Biochemistry with an option in Bioinformatics from the University of Waterloo (2020). She also serves as a consultant for Body Brave, a non-profit organization supporting individuals with eating disorders, where she works on algorithm design for personalized online recovery programming.
Location: Online via Zoom.
Outline of Presentation/Learning Objectives:

    • Explain what "precision psychiatry" is and summarize its current status in the eating disorders field.

    • Describe supervised machine learning for classification and provide a comparison of logistic regression with random forest models.

    • Outline the steps for training and evaluating supervised machine learning models  

    • Interpret application of machine learning for predicting complex clinical course in eating disorder patients and discuss next steps to advance precision psychiatry for eating disorders.
