The Ottawa Hospital’s research impact continues to grow

High-impact publications up by 50 percent over three years

Researchers at The Ottawa Hospital are publishing more scientific papers with greater impact than ever before. The total number of research publications from The Ottawa Hospital grew by 42 percent between 2014 and 2017 and the number of “high impact” publications grew by 50 percent between 2014 and 2016 (the most recent years that data is available). 

High impact publications are defined as those in the top 10 percent for citations globally, normalized by field of research*. Researchers at The Ottawa Hospital are also leaders in conducting high quality, reproducible research, although this is more difficult to measure.

“I’m tremendously proud of the success we’ve experienced in research at The Ottawa Hospital and I want to thank our dedicated scientists, clinician investigators, learners and staff as well as our patients,” said Dr. Duncan Stewart, Executive Vice-President of Research at The Ottawa Hospital and professor at the University of Ottawa. “Together we are redesigning the future of health in Ottawa and around the world.”

In addition to this success with research publications, The Ottawa Hospital is also a leader in attracting external research funding. The Ottawa Hospital ranks third out of more than 600 hospitals for funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and fifth for overall research funding.
