Dr. Paul MacPherson awarded Research Chair in Gay Men’s Health from Ontario HIV Treatment Network

September 7, 2016

Gay men make up 58 percent of the people living with HIV in Ontario. Although overall rates of new HIV infections are declining, gay men accounted for 60 percent of new diagnoses in 2015, highlighting the continuing risk of infection within this community. Factors such as adverse childhood events, homophobia, mental health issues and addictions all increase HIV risk-taking and may negatively influence gay men’s ability or willingness to access health care. Dr. Paul MacPherson was recently awarded $500,000 from the Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN) to investigate these and other factors that threaten gay men’s health, as part of his new role as OHTN Research Chair in Gay Men’s Health. Dr. MacPherson will also lead a research effort to understand the gaps in care for gay men, and help health-care workers provide integrated, culturally-sensitive care. Further details are available on the OHTN website
