Research Activities

Dr. Michael Woo's main area of interest is point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS). This is defined as the performance and interpretation of ultrasonography at the bedside of the patient by the treating clinician. It is used for diagnostic purposes, physiological monitoring, and to aid in invasive procedures.

1. POCUS Clinical Research
The advance of POCUS has been exponential in clinical medicine. As a result there are many opportunities for research in this area to provide the necessary evidence for its continued growth and impact on the healthcare of our patients. The Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography group is actively involved locally and as a member of multi-center clinical trials for POCUS.

2. POCUS Education Research
As POCUS is used by generalists and specialists it is no surprise that POCUS is now present in many undergraduate medical education programs. The Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography group continues to help develop and research educational programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing professional development using both qualitative and quantitative educational methods of research.

3. Trauma
Incorporation of evidence based guidelines in trauma care is important but at the same time very challenging. Recent research has involved the investigation of knowledge translation for the use of tranexamic acid at The Ottawa Hospital in trauma patients.
