Biographical Sketch

Since 2003, Dr. Alvarez has been doing clinical work and research at Edendale Hospital in South Africa in HIV Tuberculosis (TB). Current research focuses on adjunctive therapies to improve outcomes in HIV TB, smear negative TB diagnosis in HIV patients and retreatment TB cases. Canadian research interests include immigration TB screening programs and Aboriginal TB. Clinical work includes TB and general Respirology clinic and wards. Dr. Alvarez is also the consultant respirologist for Nunavut. He completed a Residence in Internal Medicine at the University of Ottawa, a Fellowship in Respirology at the University of British Columbia and a Masters of Public Health at Harvard University in Boston.
