Major Research Activities
Dr. Stiell is a clinical epidemiologist with a focus on health services research
in emergency medicine. This research focus includes decision making, clinical
decision rules, technology assessment and clinical trials involving acutely ill
and injured patients treated by prehospital services and in emergency
departments. Dr. Stiell currently holds a Canadian Institutes of Health Research
Scientist Award. Previously completed were a series of studies to derive,
validate, test and implement clinical decision rules for the use of radiography in
acute ankle injuries (The Ottawa Ankle Rules), and for the use of radiography
in acute knee injury (The Ottawa Knee Rule). Ongoing are studies to derive and validate
clinical decision rules for the use of computed tomography in minor head
injuries and cervical spine radiography in trauma (The CCC Study funded by
the CIHR and the Ministry of Health of Ontario). Dr. Stiell is a member of the
University of Ottawa CIHR Group Grant for Decision Support Tools. Also currently ongoing is the
Ontario Prehospital Advanced Life Support (OPALS) Study (funded by
the Ontario Ministry of Health) which will identify the most effective
programs for treating out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, major trauma, respiratory
distress, and chest pain. The OPALS Study will be conducted over eight
years in 21 Ontario communities. A grant from the Canadian Health Services
Research Foundation will allow the OPALS Study team to conduct an economic
evaluation of prehospital care. Another important focus of
research for Dr. Stiell has been the management of cardiac arrest, particularly
in the pre-hospital setting. Completed projects include the study of high
dose epinephrine, a cost-effectiveness study of different pre-hospital
systems used to treat cardiac arrest, a trial of 1,700 patients comparing
the effectiveness of standard CPR versus ACD CPR, and a trial to compare
vasopressin to epinephrine for in-hospital cardiac arrest.
