What We Do

The focus of Dr. Calder’s research program is to prevent adverse events related to Emergency Department care. She is investigating this issue by examining the incidence of adverse events among multiple emergency populations. She is also studying contributors to adverse events such as disposition decision making, team communication and follow-up mechanisms post-discharge. She also led the creation of a structured, patient safety grounded approach to morbidity and mortality rounds, an educational exercise where adverse events are discussed by frontline healthcare providers.

Dr. Calder belongs to the Emergency Medicine Research Group and is a Scientist with the Clinical Epidemiology Program at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She is also an Assistant Professor with the Department of Emergency Medicine and cross-appointed to the Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

She has a specialty certificate in Emergency Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada after completing the five year residency program at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Calder completed her Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship and obtained her Master of Science degree in Epidemiology in 2007.

Since finishing her training Dr. Calder has also completed two fellowships: Patient Safety Fellowship in Emergency Medicine by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation and the American Hospital Association Patient Safety Leadership fellowship.
